2010 Cybils Finalists, 2010 Favorite lists to Come

The 2010 Cybils Finalists were officially announced Jan. 1st. This is the fifth year of the Children's Young Adult Bloggers Literary Award and the first year I was a panelist.

I was on the Non Fiction Picture Book Panel. The seven finalist in this catergory are
Bones by Steven Jenkins
Dinosaur Mountain: Digging into the Jurassic Age by Deborah Kogan Ray
Henry Aaron's Dream by Matt Tavares
Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum by Meghan McCarthy
Sit In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Pinkney, illus. by Brian Pinkney
The Extraordinary Mark Twain (According to Susy) by Barbara Kerley.

This was a great experience. I want to thank Jone, our category organizer for keeping us on task from the very beginning. Everyone had their say and a lot was said. I reread many nominated titles (sometimes more then once) because another panelist had a different point of veiw.

Now I am really looking forward to reviewing more nonfiction picture books. I decided not to review any of the nominated titles while this was going on.

The other finalists can be found here. Congratulations to all the finalists. Seven I am very excited about are

Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey - Science Fiction Fantasy Young Adult
Smile by Raina Telgmeier - Graphic Novels Middle Grade
Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes - Science Fiction Fantasy Middle Grade
Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty by G. Neri, Young Adult
Ghostopolis by Doug Tennapal - Graphic Novels Young Adult
Scrawl by Mark Schulman - Young Adult Fiction
Split by Swati Avasthi - Young Adult Fiction

This week I will be doing my 2010 favorite books of the year lists and all of the above seven will be on a list.

I know many people like to list their favorites in December. But there are 12 months in a year not 11 so I like to wait until January. Also I prefer to do a categories (always 10)

This year's favorite list

Picture Books
Non fiction titles
funniest reads
middle grade novels
middle grade fantasy
YA novels
YA fantasy
female protagonist
male protagonist
MG/YA Debuts
MG/YA Novels

So this won't go on forever, I will do two lists a day. Once they are all up, wiil post the list of 2011 books, I am looking forward to.

Another one of my favorite books this year was They Called Themselves the kkk by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. This one was nominated in the Cybils NF Middle Grade and YA category but unfortunately didn't move on. I was very surprised by this.

I know some people will look at the NF picture book finalists and question why certain titles didn't move on. I am more then okay with that because finalists in anything are always critiqued, and that's how it should be.

I think I made my list before I read Yummy, but that's definitely one that I would add!

Thanks, Doret. I had such limited Internet access and my sore finger made it hard to comment earlier. It was great to have you as a panelist. They Called Themselves the kkk is one I want to read. The Pacific NW was heavily inflitrated by the kkk and that always surprised me. It's going to be interesting to see who wins in our category.

Aw, thanks, Doret! I'm excited too. Blogging and YA are two of my favourite things, so the CYBILS are really special to me!
